Submission Guidelines
No Man’s Land Magazine

WHAT TO SEND:

The tagline for No Man’s Land Press is Publishing the Inner Work of Men; that is what you should capture in your submissions. We’re looking for work that makes you a better man in the process of creating it. We’re looking for the rawness of journal entires, and the intention of Michelangelo’s sculptures. With this project, we’re looking to give rise to a stronger, steadier, more accountable, sensitive, and wiser voice of masculinity.

Some examples of previous submissions that work well, plus some suggestions for what might work well, not just for this magazine, but for you in doing your inner work!

  • A letter to someone in your life (child, spouse, parent, friend). Example: One man is writing a letter to his newborn son.

  • Poems and prose. I am a poet, and will always publish poetry in this magazine. Reference Robert Bly for poetry that encapsulates and inspires manhood.

  • One contributor uses short story to process his past and weave those lessons into the detailed settings of his literary mastery.

  • Visual art will always be displayed. We love art that combines self expression with self understanding. We want art that conveys a strong sense of healthy masculinity to all who lay eyes on it. Photographs welcome, too.

  • One man wrote a reflection on how important it is to choose how you spend your time. These types of reflections bridge the intimate insight of the mind with the practical application of a newfound understanding. This type of reflective journal entry is a great way to explore a topic from a personal standpoint that other men can relate to and learn from.

    * These are just suggestions, but your real invitation is to take it where your inner work guides you. Don’t limit your creativity to the above list, if something else calls to you. The two main criteria for submission are
    1. It should involve some transformation/inner work, and
    2. It must be printable in a physical magazine.

We accept submissions year-round, always free, and always read with care.

SOME GROUND RULES:

  • We only accept work from male contributors.

  • We do not accept work generated predominantly by AI. Human creativity is at the heart of what we publish. If AI was used in any supportive way, please explain in your submission notes.

  • Simultaneous submissions are encouraged. Please let us know as soon as piece or all of your submission has been accepted for publication elsewhere! (send email to david@nomanslandpress.com)

  • Please provide a brief third person bio in the contributor note section of your submission. If a submission is accepted, this will also be printed in the magazine.

  • Unfortunately at this time, No Man’s Land can’t afford to pay its contributors. However, each contributor will receive a free copy of the magazine where their work is printed. Also, this magazine is about community and reach, so I intend to respectfully and ambitiously champion any and all contributed work to the growing No Man’s Land community.

  • If you made a typo, don’t worry about it. If you messed up reallll bad, send me an email and you can fix up your submission. Please don’t flood my emails over misplaced commas.

  • Your work will always be read and held carefully and intentionally. I deeply appreciate any and all contributions. You can absolutely expect a response (give about 2-4 weeks, but may be a bit longer). I intend to send notes and feedback with each submission, as to keep this process personal, fun, friendly, open and expansive. This is more than a magazine; this is community and connection. I will treat your submitted work with that kind of reverence.

TERMS & RIGHTS:

  • By submitting work to No Man’s Land Press, you confirm that the work is your original creation and that you hold the rights to submit it.

  • Your work is and always will be yours. If accepted, you give No Man’s Land Press the rightto publish the work in print and digital formats related to the publications and promotion - always with your name attached (unless you want to be anonymous - which you MUST tell me in submission)

Thank you for submitting your work to No Man’s Land. The intention as stated above is to give a deep intimate insight into the modern male experience. Sharing intimate work is brave, and on behalf of the whole world in need of brave men willing to be vulnerable, I thank you!
